I had the honor of being a guest of the extraordinary elders, adults and children on this fascinating island—thick with a rich, troubled and complicated political story. The sight I will never forget was on these hot, humid, summer nights at around midnight each night. Seeing hundreds and hundreds of Cubans of all ages literally sitting on the low wall overlooking the ocean—to keep them cool before they went home to their air-conditionless homes.

They were all caged in on this island. The boat I was on was the only boat in the harbor—a harbor that reeked of the stench of sewage streaming down the streets and into the harbor.

Yet, with all this, the people were so full of joy. Grateful for what they had. Grateful for the family and friends around them.

Literally, an island lost in time. But a people living in the moment of every day and evening—where music was the most delicious seasoning sprinkled over all life’s dishes…
